I plan to ask my cardio dr when I next see him. Oh yes, I drink water like it's going out of style and take K-Dur (potassium) and magnesium 2x day.
I asked my primary care dr and he did not recommend cutting the tablet because it may lead to AFib.
It can, for example, make you feel very tired, even if you have gotten enough rest and have not engaged in strenuous activities. All said that in general you should not cut extended release tablets but there are exceptions and this is one of them. However my resting heart rate just kept getting lower, I guess because of other drugs. I add Propel to water which gives some potassium etc. They are generic and scored to be split but I know that splitting may hurt the time release action.

If beta blockers make you breathless, go ahead and ask for an alternative. I asked to be changed to Metoprolol 25mg XL and I take it at night. My mom and my youngest brother cannot tolerate them, even at low doses, because it makes them breathless. Metoprolol is a beta blocker and with asthma it is given with caution as it usually increases symptoms.

It's been only a week now with the lower dosage, but I feel much better since cutting the Metoprolol in half (now 12.5 2x daily). I also have asthma and I'm on the beta blocker that gives the least problems with that tho' I have had drs that might switch me to another medication.

My cardiologist said the same and even suggested I cut it to get and extra half dose if needed. (I take meds for reflux). If you want to mess with dosages (and I don't think you should), the generic Metoprolol Tartrate (referred to as just Metoprolol) can be cut in half without a problem.

I was very short of breath on this med and cardiologist weaned me off it and I am glad he did. Started with 25mg twice a day. Many thanks for all your replies.
I was advised to split my once daily 50mg and take half due to very low heart rate but I question the nurses of this hospital as I did not see the cardiologist for this decision.
