The use of fibrates was associated with a significant increase in the risk of VTE (OR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.23–2.02), without heterogeneity (I 2 = 0%).
First, our meta-analysis was almost restricted to observational studies, mainly case–control studies, and the application of formal meta-analytic methods to observational studies is controversial, since bias implicit in the study design may misrepresent the strength of associations within the data.In conclusion, the use of statins may reduce the risk of VTE, whereas the use of fibrates may increase this risk.
